Camelback Marina | Lake Austin

The Camelback Marina is a concept-driven response to both the physical conditions and cultural sensitivities of Lake Austin’s undeveloped shoreline. Designed by LSI, the project addresses ecological stewardship and public enjoyment, creating a boat dock facility that is both environmentally conscious and aesthetically iconic. Rooted in the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country, the design draws inspiration from the region’s rolling topography and native materials.

Curvilinear corten steel panels echo the form of the surrounding hills, functioning as both sculptural screening and effective wave breaks. These forms shift in opacity as visitors move along the structure, revealing and concealing views in rhythm with movement. The dock entries and integrated seating areas are carefully positioned to frame views of the iconic Pennybacker Bridge, whose materiality and silhouette subtly informed the marina’s design language.

More than a utilitarian structure, Camelback Marina is envisioned as a public artifact—an elegant, respectful addition to the lakeshore that enhances the experience for boaters, residents, and all who enjoy the waters of Lake Austin. As native Austinites and long-time users of the lake, the LSI team approached this project with a personal commitment to creating something timeless, contextual, and worthy of its setting.
